Dr. Richard Dowden, a board certified plastic surgeon in Cleveland, OH, has been performing liposuction since 1983, when he was with the Plastic Surgery Department at the Cleveland Clinic. After being there for 13 years, he entered private practice. 

Initially, the liposuction was done using modest amounts of injected salt-water, with instruments 6 or 8 mm in diameter, which left a scar about 10 mm long. Then through the 80's the amount of injected saltwater was gradually increased, and the diameter of the instruments progressively decreased, until by about 1990 the scars only needed to be about 4 mm long, and the combination of large volume saltwater infusion plus small size instruments became known as the "Tumescent Liposuction" technique. Then in the early 90's, another advanced development was the "Ultrasonic Liposuction" technique. In most of Dr. Dowden's cases, both the Tumescent and Ultrasonic methods are used together. He takes pride in being able to help his patients determine what type of procedure will best meet their individual needs.

Dr. Dowden has written numerous articles, scientific papers, and book chapters about plastic surgery, and has lectured extensively overseas and in South America. He has been on the faculty of many teaching and instructional courses dealing with plastic surgery.

Although most of his patients come from Ohio and the surrounding six states (Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York) Dr. Dowden has patients from almost every state, as well as from Canada, Mexico, and several countries in Europe and the Middle East. Special facilities and programs are available to assist the out-of-state patients, helping to make the arrangements as easy as possible for them.
